My 8 year-old daughters has similar problem. She would cry in terror and walk to my room looking for me. She went downstairs once. It is very hard to calm her down or wake her up. She would scream and keep on breaking away from me. She wakes up usually 10 to 15 minutes after. And she has no recollection of what happened the 2nd day.
The doctor said she is sleep-walking. She said there is no need to wake her up since it will be over in about 15 minutes anyway. The cause of this could be stress or too much stimulation during the day.
My daughter never has this problem when traveling since she shares a room with us or her sister. So another way to prevent it maybe assure her more during the day so she will not be friend by things nobody understands.
