The problem with statins is that the drug makers promote use of statins in almost general population to a point that the researchers suggest that statins should be added to tap water just like fluoride.

At this time, 13 million Americans are taking statins. There is some guideline saying that 40 million Americans should take this class of drugs.

I agreed with you that statins should be used only for patients at high risk of heart disease/events. Probably no one should argue about this.

Lowering cholesterol is not the way to reduce heart risk. I agreed with the author John carey that people may benefit more from a healthy diet and lifestyle in light of side effects and expenses associated with the ineffective drugs.

Those who really care about their heart health should consider using a low-fat diet such as Ornish diet. It has been proved that such a diet can stop or even reverse the narrowing of arteries.
