Hepatitis B virus is certainly contagious, can cause lifelong infection, cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver, liver cancer, liver failure, and death.
If you already had exposure to HB patient, go see your primary doctor to ask a blood test of HBsAg, HBsAb, HBcAg, HBeAg and HBeAb. If all of them are negative, you can ask your doctor to give your HB vaccine.
If you have HBsAb(+), you don't have to get any vaccine at least for a year.
Don't panic. HBV is infectious. Howver it only happens when the virus DNA is duplicating. The common infection path are through blood, sex, drugs and mothers-to-babies.
