Don't know where you are and what option you have.

Since you don't have any children now, you only need coverage for the two of you from your employer. If there are several options, look at the fine prints and pick one that offer private room for delivery, which I personally believe is worth the money, in case you have a more than a snap-of-fingers labour(don't want to scare you, if it's a long one, you want to have a private space to move around and be with your family). The hospital charge that you need to pay out-of-pocket is about $1000. When the baby is born, you can switch to a family plan. With that you probably will have several options to pick with different amounts of co-pays. To figure that out, let's say your baby will go to see doctor 10 times for his first year, then you can find out which one costs you less (premium plus co-pay).

Just as important is to find a good gynecologist and a pediatrician. Pick those who have own practice or partnership(I prefer partnership, in case the single doctor is on vacation), not those at a teaching hospital. With pediatrician, you probably want one located within 5 miles.
