X-ray's side effects: there is no short term (immediate) side effects. Long tern side effects are: radiation to the eyes, or radiatin to the thyroid. We are more conservative now in ER with ordering head CT after a head injury because some studies show that about 1 out several hundreds children receiving head CT develops thyroid cancer down the road.
