Your nephew's amblyopia is caused by strabimus. Therapies at such age may improve the amblyopia, but you have to take the kid to the hospital every other day or so for a long period of time and it can relapse later, simply because the strabimus is not corrected. In my opinion it is better to have surgery at an early age (definitely before the amblyopia develops to the point to need glasses). Such surgery, which may sound scary to parents, is relatively simple. Typically no overnight stay at hospital, one small incision on one eye, a couple of stitches, patient gets the eye covered for a week. There should be no visible scar. There may be slight residue strabimus but should not be noticeble to a stranger.
