To control the radiational dosage technicians use filters to absorb part of the radiation from the emitter. The 2mm thickness aluminum filter has be the standard filter used for diagnostic illuminations since the 50's. These days with modern sensors may allow lower dosage. If you are really interested in this, I can tell you that one extra mm reduces the radiation by 40%.
