Once your contribute to an IRA, you have to keep all the records and update them in your tax return every year. I believe the tax benefit is not worth the extra bookkeeping burden. In additions, one day you may find that you have too many accounts to manage. The size of your regular IRA account will be only a fraction of your 401K accounts. So my suggestion is to maximize your 401K contributions. If that's not enough, contribute part or all of your retirement money to a Roth 401K, if it's avaiable to you.
