the key point is that nobody can charge double rent

they can't charge you if they rent to new tenants. Landlord also can't have the property empty without any effort to rent it out. Find a tenant your own that is the only way to get out the lease, send a statement to landlord if they refuse to rent to new tenant.Landlord could charge you other fees in order to find new tenants, like put ad on newspaper.
