At Vanguard, if you open a mutual fund account, buying its fund has no transaction fees. If you like to invest in vanguard mutual funds, vanguard would be your best choice. You can also switch inside vanguard funds family without fees. However, if you want to buy stocks, vanguard transaction fee is slightly higher than other discount brokers.

At Etrade, etc. they usually charge you $10 or so to buy stocks. Fees vary very much when buying mutual funds. You can go to their site to find out the fee table.
