答应了smileJJ和 littlehorse写一点护肤和养生。我其实真说不出什么道道。不爱看英文的朋友可调过。没什么是你不知道的。
First I have to apologize for writing this in English. It would take me forever to type it in Chinese. Not only does it slow me down, but it affects my writing as I have to struggle to find the right words. My sentences sound a little awkward, so please bear with me.
It would be fair to say that I know next to nothing about skin care, health and fashion, compared to the experts here. What I have to say about it, then, probably ought to be taken with a grain of salt . Nevertheless, as on many matters, I have an opinion.
Beauty is not skin deep, but the skin is on the surface and is the first thing that people see. I have very pale skin. The lack of pigment makes me very vulnerable to sunburn. I don't get tanned, I get burned every time. I am also allergic to most sunblock lotions. The only kind I can tolerate still cause irritation if I use it for more than three days. I don't have much choice except for staying away from sun exposure. Sunglasses and a big hat are my protections in the summer. I look really weird on the beach since I am covered from head to toe. As Dr. Henry Li pointed out, UV light is the most damaging thing for a person's skin. My vulnerability may somehow contribute to my relatively youthful look. Personally I don't think I look younger for my age; I think it's just that those were flattering pictures. But every picture posted here is a flattering one, therefore I am playing fairly.
The most expensive skin care product I ever used is La Mer concentrate. I actually bought it for my hu*****and in the hope of avoiding scarring since he injured himself on a biking trip. Like every typical guy, he only used it for a handful of times, thus I can't speak for its famous healing power. But whenever I experience a skin irritation, I apply this serum, nothing but this serum, and it always works wonders. It soothes and calms my skin.
A gorgeous lady doctor once told me that the best way to fight wrinkles is by exfoliating, to cause some controlled damage to the skin every day. The skin will respond by getting thicker. I exfoliate three times a week. I use Aveeno Skin Brightening scrub. It is gentle enough to use daily.
Most of my skin care products are drug store brands. I was convinced by an article that I read in this forum many years ago that top brand names are not necessarily better than well established drug store brands. I can't lay my hands on the author and the original article, but she sounded like an industry insider. Right now I am using Alpha Lipoic Acid Vitamin C cream and eye serum by Reviav Labs. It was recommend by someone in this forum when 药妆 was a hot topic. It works pretty well for me. Whoever recommended them, thank you. I believe they are only sold online.
About diet, I am a heavy eater. The size of my lunch box often stunned my American co-workers who eat like birds but look nothing like birds. On the contrary to the popular diet theory that recommends four to five small meals throughout the day to keep metabolism high, I eat three heavy meals. I eat when I am hungry; I eat until I am satisfied. This way I don't have to snack in between. 少吃零食 is the traditional Chinese diet theory and I truly believe that our way is better than their way. However, I allow myself to indulge in my temptations whenever I want, which are chocolate ice cream in a big waffle cone with my home-made slow roasted almonds and Skippy Super Chunk Peanut butter. Don't make food your enemy. That is a battle you are bound to lose.
Research shows that after age 40, a little excessive body fat makes people look younger as the face appears to be fuller. So in order to look good, stay in the shade this summer and order an ice cream. Make it double scoops. :)
I am not obsessed with going to the gym. I try to exercise three to four times a week. At my age, cardio exercise alone is not enough to keep me in shape. Weight lifting is the key. It tones the body. I started to practice yoga two years ago and absolutely love it. I had been suffering from lower back pain, a common complaint for women my age. I noticed that I am free from pain as long as I do my yoga and weight lifting.
About style, I have been receiving QQH from ladies asking me where I get my clothing. I get most of my clothing from Nordstorm Rack since I like the Nordstorm style, but don't want to pay the Nordstorm price.
It is an outlet store, and it takes time and luck to find good pieces. It can be overwhelming and may not suit your lifestyle. I often have people complaining to me that they are not able to find anything on the overcrowded racks. My trick is that I window shop at Nordstorm once a while to get in touch with the current trends, or simply admiring the designers' style. When the pieces I like end up in the Rack at the end of the season, I can easily pick them up. It takes time and money to build a decent wardrobe. If money is not an object for you, you don't have to go through this. For me, I take pride in buying good quality stuff at the lowest price.
One more rule that I have been following is that I never get carried away by the hottest trend. I don't want to wear something that screams "spring of 2009" but looks so outdated next year. Add some current elements, like accessories, into your style, but not the whole thing. This rule is more for women in their mature years. For young girls here, have fun experimenting, you can't go wrong when you have youth on your side.
Also, only buy things that you absolutely love. If you have any hesitation and have to consult other people's opinion, then that may not be the item for you.
Thanks for all the people who have been generous with your support. From the bottom of my heart, I wish all my Chinese sisters to be happy and to be healthy. If you possesses these two, then you are undeniably pretty.
Thanks for reading my post.
