Many Laker fans feel this way too.
Many times, Kobe roams by design to save his energy on the offensive end. But what upsets me the most is, he doesn't respect most of the guys he's facing and so he slacks off (see Ronny Brewer in the Utah series).
But I am not aware of the voting standards of the all-NBA defensive team and maybe people vote more on perceived capability as opposed to performance night in and night out?
Kobe has the capability to lock people down. See game 1 in the Denver series for example, Kobe guarded Billups and shut him down, and then when Melo heated up, Kobe switched to cover him. At the same time, he had to carry the load on the offensive end.
How many guys are asked to do all that?
MJ is a great defensive players but he doesn't guard the elite players on the opposing teams and he is not asked to shut them down. It's Pippen's job.
So, I think I can cut Kobe some slack, even when I get mad at him for missing his man.
you are not alone
