Do you know why it is called "match"?

Answer: it matches what you contribute for the year.

There is a match percentage. What you got is calculated as

MIN( your contribution * match percentage, your salary* maximum percentage )

Therefore, as long as you contribute (your salary* maximum percentage/match percentage), you will get the entire match. It does NOT matter when you contribute.
