MIT pays taxes on its commercial property and in doing so is the single largest taxpayer in Cambridge, representing over 12% of the City's revenue stream. Also, since 1928 MIT has provided an annual voluntary payment in lieu of taxes (PILOT) on its academic property that is legally tax-exempt.
