俺有过好几个remote employees (俺IT的, 都是software engineers), 最后work out 留下来的只有一个。 有的fire了, 有的leave for other opportunities, 有的transferred to other teams。 I would strongly suggest you to communicate as detailed as possible to your manager, especially during 1x1.
For remote employees, over-communication is always better than under-communication. My only survived remote employee has great communication skills. First he was able to prove his strong technical skills to me. Second he always keeps me updated on the status of his projects/tickets。 If he could not meet the deadline, he always gave me heads-ups in advance so I have enough time to allocate other resources to help him out. And he was always able to provide good reasons AND demonstrate his efforts. Of course most of the time, he meets the timeline. Otherwise it doesn't matter how good his reasons are.
俺从manager的角度说一说吧

非常感谢您从mgr角度的建议。还想问一下您平时是怎么monitor remote employee的活动的?
