Under certain circumstance

Such as you will be getting a promotion, raise or bonus in your current company. Or, you will have a significant shares of stocks that will be vested. You can make the case to the new company that you would like to be compensated if you have to give up those. Some times I give people sign on if I know they won't be eligible for the next bonus payout if the time they join the company passes the cut off.
