I won't say big boss is my ally. to him, I am a very useful tool, no more, no less. So is my own boss. We are the competent type. But the old man is his buddy buddy. Big boss' position is very hard to guess. one never knows what he thinks. In this case, I think he will give my boss another slap on the hand. Me? well if I can survive I 'd be happy. My last straw would be to go to HR.
