I now think your boss shouldn't even waste any minute on this issue, just let it go and let it get over.

It's easy for him to do: Per notice from the immigration authority, we are not allowed to continue your employment for the reason you're not authorized to work in the US, the employment must be terminated by this day. Please plan your activities according to this notice.
