Love will give him a good sense of security, which is the base of ANYTHING.

Help him grow his confidence. Try not to put pressure on him. Encourage him to try; Learn how to prioritize; Do one thing at a time and get focused. When he get more confident, he will be more willing to listen to others and ready to ask when having a question.

Getting laid off is not the end of world as Laotu said. The ultimate job security is:
1. Health; 2. Skill.
