okey, people get hired for bringing money to his/her emploer. Only when you bring more money to your employer in a direct or an indirect way, your employer can survive. I guess your colleague, "the fellow", is not get paid for his title or pattent, but for his capability to bring the company money. AND, he get paid not for what he has brought to the company, but for what he CAN bring to the company in the future.
In my performance evaluation, I wrote "how much revenue I brought to the company, and what was the yield improvement via my idea, and how much profit those design changes created". I am not a person who always talk money. But performance and business is based on money, and I got to hit "the topic" at a performance review.
