Tamron 18-55 VS Nikon 17-55 are

not in the same league, so there is no comparison.

Any new Nikon lens coming out of Nikon in the last few years have been AFS, so we are expecting to see more of them in the coming years, even later in Sept. because Nikon typically announce one or two lens a year, here is the list in the last few years:

AFS VR 55-200
AFS 18-55 II
AFS VR 70-300
AFS VR 105mm Micro
AFS 18-135mm
AFS VR 18-200mm
AFS VR 200mm F2
AFS 17-55mm F2.8
AFS 12-24mm F4
AFS 18-70mm
AFS VR 70-200mm F2.8

So more are coming, and the only third party lens currently compatible is Sigma HSM lens.
