6 figure is hard to get. high hourly rate is much easier.

Many companies has salary classification/grade. Very hard to break the ceiling. I once rejected the offer at 97K to make $60/hr instead. No vacation, no benefits, but more money. Maybe negociate a contract to perm deal if feeel unsecured.
