华尔街上的Quants 2: 小中/老留 vs 小留/中留

老留博士，特别是CUSPEA出来的物理博士，八十年代末/九十年代连postdoc的位置都找不到，做教授的理想破灭，后来靠着扎实的数学基础，开始在Sell-side公司做quants，一路风光到Great Recession (2007-2009) 前夕。 Volcker Rule在2010年颁布后，Sell-side公司的quants也就大势已去。

后起之秀是Buy-side公司Hedge funds/Prop shops里的quants，这里只谈quant traders和quant researchers，他们是公司挣钱主力，quant developers只做辅助性工作。

小中绝大多数BS/MS学位适合做quant traders，Hedge funds/Prop shops里大概有一半看出身，另一半不看出身。看出身，小留比不上小中，小留本科进Top 10大学的很少。不看出身，小留也很难和小中比，中国高中生尖子绝大多数读清华北大，来美读本科的尖子不多。所以，Hedge funds/Prop shops里的BS/MS好位置，小中占了很大比例，小留染指的不多。

博士quants又是完全不同的景色，小中读博士的很少，博士quants里小中很少。小留/中留博士人才济济，很多是美国最好的大学博士毕业的，所以博士quants里，小留/中留的比例很惊人。Citadel Securities CEO是北大本科/Berkeley博士, 很快Citadel就有了北大清华帮, 据说小留/中留不是北大清华本科, 就是美国最好的大学博士毕业, 也很难进Citadel.
