backbend is actually a lift up and pushing forward to create enough space but definitely needs long time practice and to build the muscle memories. i was not flexible at all years ago. all are through mindful practice. I even try to do quick fully back bend like the video when i am alone inside the bathroom and the elevator at work. Here is a quick youtube video. You can see how to lift up and push forward.  Maybe will write more sometime when I am not busy.
