My daughter started at age5 and stopped at 17 and half when she went to college. At beginnig she played 20-30 minutes a day then increased to 45 -60 minutes at t age 8. At 7th grade she took the level 7 test. At 8th grade she took the level 9 test and at 9th grade she took the level10 (advanced) test. At 10th and 11th grade she tried twice for panel test but failed. Usually before level test she had to spend more time for playing piano, often 2-3 hours a day for 3-4 weeks. For many reasons she had 8 different teachers. Changing teacher really provented her progress. She said many time that she did not have passion on classic music. She kept practice was because we insisted and she also did not want to give up. Although she did not piano that much, I still see she was greatly benified from keeping playing. She has developed strong adaptability and self-control capability. Also being able to pay attention to details, have whole body coordinating and shape memorization skills. She did make a CD as part of supplyment material when applying for colleges. I suggest that kids should do sports when learning music. It is a good balance because sports makes a person being courageous
