Williams = Harvard. Williams is the most prestigious in its group, and Harvard is the most prestigious in its group. Williams students tend to study math and the hard sciences in greater numbers than Amherst students; this is similar between Harvard and Yale. Williams is larger than most top LACs by about 100 students per class, and Harvard is a bit larger than Yale and Princeton in undergraduate population.
Amherst = Yale. Yale students tend to study the humanities and go to law school more than Harvard students, and Amherst students are similar with respect to Williams students. Amherst and Williams are football rivals in the NESCAC, like Yale and Harvard in the Ivy League.
Swarthmore = Princeton. Swarthmore is one of the few top LACs that offer engineering, and Princeton is the best of the top Ivies for engineering. Both have reputations for academic rigor, tough grading, and students pursuing PhDs after college rather than professional schools in law and medicine.
Pomona = Stanford. Top west coast LAC and top west coast research university. There is actually an acronym for the top LACs—”WASP,” which, interestingly maps exactly to “HYPS” in this analogy.
Harvey Mudd = MIT. Top STEM LAC and top STEM research university.
