because you don't know them personally...I mean at a personal level...being part of their life, then, you'll know..

There is still so called "tenure track"-you come in as assistant prof., promote to associat, and finally, become a full professor..alas, you lost all of your funding...guess what, Department will put up with you for one year, two year, then, you'd better try damn hard to get something, by year three, you probably will have to go.

The reality is that funding dictates everything, many professors are paid a big proportion by their own funding...if you teach, the situation is different, you may be paid a teaching salary. But the deal is, good schools nowadays uses lectures and of course, lots lots of TAs..not a lot of professors teach...

One big exception though..if you are an endowed chair professor, life is just wonderful..but, as an endowed chair, the chance of you lacking of funding is slim..
