请教：芝加哥房东无理押下的押金还有可能拿回来吗？

我去年离家短期在芝加哥工作，在城里租了公寓，租期到时正好回家。离开前一天房东说把钥匙留在公寓里就行，他检查房子之后会把押金寄来，当时也没多想。回来后再没下文，给房东打过多次电话并留言，没有任何反应。这是去年五月底的事了，还有希望拿回押金吗？专家们有啥好的建议？
 
不知道房东现在的住址，租约上只有房东出租房的地址，每次租金都是放在那个公寓的信箱里房东取走的。不过现在好像花点钱能在网上买到（看到过，没试过）。600美元押金，请假飞一趟不一定值。但是想想如果我们就这么不了了之的话，估计这种房东会一直这么干下去。请问芝加哥small claims court能用邮寄的方式申请索赔吗？如果到时不能去最坏会有什么后果？就想试一试房东收到小额法庭通知后，是不是会有反应。
