In southern state, $150K can buy you a decent house in Bay area standard. Here is what you can get for $150K:
2200 sf, all brick, 10 years old, 1/4 to 1/5 acre in nice middle class neigborhood. A few years ago, I saw a 4000 sf house for sale @200K. It was a ugly house, but not old:)
