If you put money in CD for the last 8 years, you will get about 25-35% (depending on where you put it) return, much better and S&P. Who said you can already keep the value of your money and what guanrantees you can always beat inflation? Sometimes (like now) you just don't have other choices that can automatically guarantee better return than CD.
