pay estimated tax

Hi:

For the last three years, I always have to pay additional a few thousand tax and pay the IRS penalty. 

This year, I am thinking that I will pay some upfront. Can I just send in a check without estimating the tax? I downloaded form 1040-ES. I can send in a check with a vouch,
