I come to this place more or less for entertainment and pick up a few ideas here and there. As the title indicates, it should really be a place where people exchange sparkling ideas on management of personal fianance and investment. Unfortunatly, this forum is dominated by RE which does not define "tou zhi li chai" since RE really should be a small portion of your portfolio if at all unless you are a professional. More recently, it shifts to stock investment, one extreme to another. However, it is easy to understand since who has all the time sitting in front of a computer except those doing these for a living.
That being said, I still believe this place should be a place to bind us together. If I have a commission to give, I rather give it to one of my Chinese realtors. If I need a loan, I rather bring the business to CaLoanAgent as long as he or she practices to the standard. The reason is quite simple, I want everyone of us to get rich and be strong as a community. In Chinese words, "fertilized water should not flow to others field". You get the idea. I like Miat's idea to make our community as rich as the Jews. Look at their influence on this country.
Back to wealth. I always preach your biggest asset is your health, physical, mental and spiritual. There is a calculator on CNNMONEY to figure your life expectancy for retirement planning. I was surprised to see how your personality can affect how long you will live. That is why we say "harmony generates wealth", or "he chi shen chai". It is good to your health and personal relationship which often spells into success financially. "Little stone" sets an example, never get mad at anybody or anything. And he is smart to protect himself. This is a place where nobody should get hurt here, either emotionally or financially.
Again, I want to stress for everyday Jane and Joe, RE, stocks or specialty such as precious metal, oil etc is insignificant in our portfolio. Of course, it is a different story if you are a professional and doing these for a living. Everyday Jane and Joe has their own profession. Their portfolio should aim at long term gain. Decades of data from academia prove that buy and hold is your best bet, like BayFamily's lazy man's investment. And the majority should be in a good mix of index funds. True, life is too short to miss the fun. So as long as you can sleep on the loss of stocks, go ahead and play. As long as you have time and energy to be a landlord, go ahead. But Jane and Joe has his own job.
For those soliciting business here in a subtle way, I have no problem as long as your practice is ethical professional and not misleading. After all, I want all my Chinese friends, be a realtor, loan agent, finance advisor, to be successful. "Fei shui bu liu wai ren tian".
Our community is doing a great job educating our next generation. Try to show them a bigger vision than doing great in school. This country is led by lawyers. Show them how to aquire leadership skills. We do poorly in terms of leading because of our culture, "lead bird will be killed". My observation tells me Chinese boys are shy when it comes to leadership.
A littel bit off the topic now. My point is to help our community get rich and strong. It will benefit everybody. And with 2008 around the corner, let us make our existence and voice felt by this great country.
Did I drink too much tonight? NO!
