再补充一点：灭亡不等同于超越，不可混为一谈

从长期来看，日尔曼人对于罗马帝国的超越，不在于日尔曼人在古代灭亡了西罗马帝国（这实际上是一种文明上的倒退），而在于日尔曼人在近代和现代所创造的西方文明无论从深度还是广度都全面超越了古罗马帝国的成就。

古罗马帝国的成就主要体现在版图上和军事上，当然还有罗马法律和早期的共和民主制，而从科技成就这方面来看，当时的罗马帝国还不如同时代的汉朝先进。

而现在的日尔曼西方社会的成就，无论从版图上（包括了欧洲，美洲和澳洲）和军事上，还是科技成就上，都是惊人的。

所以说，日尔曼人最终超越了古罗马帝国，从长远来看是没有错的。
