The pay is not good because of the pension
and health benefits after retirement.
Also, the house price is low over
there(around half or one third of the bay area)
In 2000-2002, some people moved there from
bay area and most of them settle down there.
The biggest employer is the state of California.
I heard that it employed around 100,000 to 120,000 state employees. The State do hire lots of
contractors who has very good pay.
Intel has one branch office which employed
around 6000 to 8000 employees. HP and Oracle
have a small branch office there too.
