You are absolutely right from number crunching point of view.  However, most of people have personal concerns. If they don't buy enough insurance (most of time unnecessary), they just couldn't sleep at the night. I usually use the maximum deductible allowed by the lenders.  It is $5000.  And it significantly reduced the preimum.
