It is not for average investor.  The return highly depends on luck to most people.  Do not touch gas wells.

If you spread out your investment to more than 5 oil wells, you have better chance to recop your investment and have ok return.

Some investors are using this investment to gain tax benefit, and spread out the income to 10+ years at lower tax rate.
