greensand filter with Chlorine as pretreatment or regeneration.

Water softener is not the right solution for high iron/manganese concentration, which seems to be your situation. The resin is more expensive and the life can be reduced by iron residual. If you do not have water hardness problem, use greensand filter, is cheaper and easier to regenerate.
