When you convert, if all your IRA are none-deductible T-IRA, there will be no tax issue on principal, as long as you pay tax on growth. But if you have rollover IRA from 401K, when convert, you need to pay tax on part of the principal.

There are many articles about this. And there are complicated way to get around it too.
