My understanding is that, assume that are W-2 based,

(1) Roth IRA is fine, but may not make up 401K.

(2) If you have 401K, you may not get regular IRA. 

(3) You need to meet all other restrictions adn limitations.

 

If you are 1099 based or self-employed, there are a lot ways.
