debt collection

I have a question regarding a letter I received from Northland Group, informing me that they have been assigned to collect on an old Macy's card. I knew that was a dispute between my wife and Macy's for a purchase. I had bad credit socre because of that.

Now my question is should I pay Northland. How to make sure I can trust Northland and get rid of this bad record?

Should I ignore? or pay them? or pay them under some conditions? Thanks
