Political affiliation is not uniform across all fields of medicine:
- Republican-leaning specialties:
- Surgeons (67% Republican in one analysis)
- Anesthesiologists (65% Republican)
- Urologists (62% Republican)
- Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, and other procedure-oriented specialties tend to lean Republican.
- Democratic-leaning specialties:
- Pediatricians (over two-thirds Democrat)
- Psychiatrists (over two-thirds Democrat)
- Infectious disease specialists
- Internal medicine, geriatrics, endocrinology, and oncology also have a majority of registered Democrats.
