Yes, you need recharacterization

Seems that you opened account in Vanguard. Please see below from Vanguard. I would suggest you call Vanguard and ask for the right reps so you may be able to save some steps. But you need to do recharacterization. If your gains are not realized, you can choose a down day for recharacterization. You can do recharacterization before 10/15/10.

Vanguard reports a recharacterization on Form 1099-R as a distribution from the Roth IRA and on Form 5498 as a contribution to the non-Roth IRA. (In Box 7 of Form 1099-R, there will be an "R" for a contribution or conversion made for 2008 and recharacterized for 2009, or an "N" for a contribution or conversion made for 2009 and recharacterized in 2009. Contributions and conversions for 2008 that are recharacterized in 2009 will be reported on 2009 tax forms, which will be distributed in 2010.)

Individuals who file their income tax return by their tax-filing deadline (including extensions) have an automatic extension until October 15 to recharacterize contributions and conversions for that tax year. In general, individuals who have filed a return before they recharacterize a contribution or conversion must file an amended return for the tax year for which the contribution or conversion was made.
