I started investing in 529 in November 2002, $700 per month. after 7 years and 3 month (87 month, total investment = 87 * 700 = 60900), I have about $80,000 in the account. The return is:
(80000 - 60900) / 60900 = 31.36%
While in the same period, Dow Jones went from 8500 to about 10000, or 17.64%.
The gain in 529 is also tax free, which means almost doubling the gain on pre tax basis.
I wish that I had more money to put into it, but that was the best I could do.
I am satisfied with my 529 plan
Why are people against 529 plan
