楼梯和loft的handrail间隙超过4英寸，怎么办？

有一个老旧出租房的楼梯和二楼loft的handrail (steel) 的间隙不符合state code (code要求小于4英寸）（见图），图中间隙大约5英寸。除了换新的handrail， 有其他方法可以改正吗？请大家给出出主意。谢谢！
