many don't even have a clue what is retention bonus.

AIGers signed the contract, if they stay through 2008, they will get the retention bonus in March 2009.

They stay through 2008, now you are telling them "oh, I was just kidding." ?

Again, they maybe flaws that should be fixed, but simply saying they should not get it is wrong either.
