我在HomeDepot摔骨折了，应该如何要求索赔

我两个月以前在HomeDepot买瓷砖时，被店里堆放货物的栈板突出来的木板给绊倒了，左膝盖骨裂。当时我的律师朋友建议我目前先治疗，好了以后再和HomeDepot索赔算账。HomeDepot倒是打了多次电话给我问情况，要我提供医疗费用帐单和医生诊断，我还没有提供。我目前已经基本痊愈，只是走路还有一点点瘸。

第一次遇到这种情况，是否一定要请律师？应该要求多少索赔？请大家提供建议。谢谢，
