求助：do I need to go to my rental to receive summon?

My tenant shared the house with his friends with no written sublease.  One of his friends broke up with the tenant and moved out in sept. 2017. Now the moved out friend sues my tenant for not returning his deposit via small claim court.  I never received $ from the friend but I know the tenant collected $from him. The friend of my tenant emailed me that he sent me a summon too for he has to include me in order to sue my tenant.  My insurance and one other lawyer told me I don't need to go accept the summon since I was not served right. (I don't live there, and email doesn't count. )  So i told the tenant to return it to sender.  Now another lawyer sees my post and advised that I should go receive the summon.   I am confused. Also my tenant already returned the summon to sender a few days ago after our phone call.  Did I do it wrong? What should I do now? Please advise. We are in california. Many thanks!
