vehicle that the gov't offered you. if you have better ways to invest and gain higher returns, simply don't do it. 401k is never mandatory.
but for most of the people, it makes sense given the tax advantage, possible company match, and most importantly the direct deduction method that displines you to save regularly.
true, many plans don't have a lot of investment options. but the majority of the people don't really want to actively manage it. so they can just put money in index funds and stable income funds based on the level of risk they can take. if starting in your 20s, in 30-40 years you should have a pretty decent size of savings. as you age, you should also reallocate more and more into stable income and reduce your exposure to the equity market. I thought this is a much better way than relying on the gov't or companies for retirement (beside those ways are probably not viable anyway).
what's the big deal? 401K is just an investment
