There are Unversity of Chicago, Northwestern University, University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Illinois Urbana Champagne, University of Wilsconsin, University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Michigan State University, Indiana University, Purdue University, University of Iowa, Iowa State University, Unversity of Minnisota, Washington University, etc.
There are a lot of Fortune 500 companies' headquartered in Chicago, the job market is good.
State and city governments' finance is not that good. State tax and Chicago (Cook county) sales tax is high. But the problem is caused by public sector union. They can not be solved until State of Illinois and Chicago filing for bankcrapcy to wipe them out which will not happen for a while.
