From van Gogh letters, one day he went out with a fellow painter for a plein air study. Confronted by some landscape that deeply moved van Gogh, his company didn't feel a thing but annoyance. On their way back they came across a soldier and who was inspired by van Gogh's study and made some highly relevant comments. Van Gogh thus recalled in his letter: The soldier was a true artist, the painter was not.
